Bonbon Gaining Altitude

Why Dogs Stopped Flying

Before humans, dogs flew everywhere.
Their wings of silky fur
wrapped hollow bones.
Their tails wagged
like rudders through wind,
their stomachs bare to the sullen earth.

Out of sorrow for the first humans
stumbling, crawling, helpless and cold
dogs folded their great wings into paws
soft enough to walk beside us
Forever.

They still weep for us, pity our small noses.
our unfortunate eyes, our dull teeth.
They lick our faces clean, keep us warm at night.
Sometimes they remember flying
And bite our ugly hands.

-Kenneth Brewer

As you can see our Standard Poodle, Bonbon, still attempts flight.

With thanks to Bobbb who published this poem at his blog, Zenspace...
I read it there and loved it.

Hey lydia-
I really have a big thank-you to give to you for diligently keeping up with my blog even in its darkest hour of silence. The fact that you commented mere hours after the publishing timestamp means so much to me. Thank you for keeping up with it.

I've never seen any of the bourne movies. Should I rent them?
Anyway, thanks again.
-Adam

Hi Adam,
I'm glad that you're glad I stuck around. You don't excel in school and all those extra activities without prioritizing. Now that summer's here I'll look forward to more of your interesting takes on life. Yes, I think you would really enjoy the Bourne movies; I recommend them.

I love this poem

I had posted it in tribute when I learned of the death of its author
Ken W Brewer who was poet laureate for the state of Utah

Anthropologists are unsure just how far back man’s relationship with dogs
I think it is safe to assume that when man left the cradle of the African savanna some 50 – 100,000 years ago
Dogs were already at his side

Thanks for the mention
Say hello and thanks to Bonbon for me

Bobbb and Little Bird,

I love this poem too. It's all the better knowing more about the poet, so thanks Bobbb for the info.
William Stafford, whose poetry I revere, was Oregon's poet laureate at the time my ex graduated from law school and he was the speaker at his graduation. Very special.

Wow, I left a message yesterday but I don't see it here so I'll leave it again:

I always knew my dog Lucy could fly! her feet don't hit the ground when she runs...can't catch it in a photo, I've tried!

Mibsy,
I'm glad you sent your message again. I've noticed that if I mis-key (because I misread) those crazy comment moderator letter codes, that my comments are on hold until I key the next code offered.
I have a photo of Bonbon at about 2 months that shows her running in air. I hope you can catch your dog in a photo someday!
