bathing in classical music

Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water bath is to the body.

-Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

(Let me make it perfectly clear that, per the above quote, I am in no way advocating bathing only once or twice a week......although I do urge you to consider shorter showers for water conservation!)

I'm a bit bogged down with minutia today: tedious chores, animal issues, and must-do's at my desk. Without my favorite classical music radio station as background the day would collapse in on itself, dragging me into the whir.

There's a link at the end of this post to one of those quizzes that are fun from time to time.
My results - below - were right on in this instance. I basically love all kinds of music, but, as with the old saying You Are What You Eat, in other ways You Are The Music You Prefer..........

I love KBPS All Classical FM in Portland, Oregon. Mike and I have been supporting members for over a decade now. The station streams online so you can listen also, if you'd like, from anywhere in the world, anytime of the day or night.

You are a somewhat serious person who enjoys studying subjects deeply.

Art of all kinds interests you, and a good piece of art can really effect you emotionally.

You are inspired by human achievement, and you appreciate work that takes years to accomplish.

For you, the finer things in life are not about snobbery - they're about quality.

So, What Kind of Music Are You?
`

I want to add a special Happy 16th Birthday to my nephew, Noah, who was a magician when he was a kid and is now a really rockin' musician. Remember what I said about American Idol, Noah .....

NOW PLAYING

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18

Now that's a classic

Today I am Reggae music
But last night I was a Gregorian Chant…

Tomorrow I will be
The song of a million birds
Announcing the coming
Of an early spring

Loft wings
Ride the air
And make music
That none can hear
Unless they should
Stop
And surrender
To the wonder
Of all that is
For the sound
Of a single plume of down
Brushing your gaze
As it falls endlessly
Will in time be
As symphony
To me

So to the wonder
Of all that is
Am I now given
I am Rock
I am Rhythm
I am Blues

I am Opus
Sonnet and song
Symphony and Suite

I am sixteen bars of pure heaven
With a bridge to hell
And back

But always, always
Always
I am the soft low murmur
Of a deep bamboo flute
Calling the sunset
To accompany those birds of spring
With perfect harmony
As they return each year
And each evening
Until I am
No more

Red rocks and horses ears...
Still catching up
Hope this finds you well
Bobbb

happy birthday to noah, my 16th birthday was hardly a month ago!

heres my results:

"You are energetic and expressive. You love feeling alive.
You never get sick of your favorite things - they're what makes life special.
You don't take tradition or conventions too seriously. You live for the future.
You enjoy remixes and re-interpretations of things. Life is about making improvements."

now, im no fan of classical music, but its very typical of you to be very devoted to a cause you belive in and support it, something you should be proud of :)

@Bobbb- Your impromptu NOW PLAYING is no doubt one of the most beautiful poems I've ever read. Can't thank you enough for this. /Very good to hear from you. As always I'm sending good wishes your way. May it be a happy spring.....

@Adam- Happy Belated 16th Birthday to you! What was the date?
Interesting description on your music quiz results......what type of music are you, is this jazz?

@Looking to the Stars- That is awfully fun that you, your husband and doxies all love classical music. I think our dogs like it, but I know our cats treasure it. :)

Today: Von Williams "The Lark Ascending." Heaven.
I have a little I-Pod Shuffle, which is how I like to listen to music these days. The classical selections on our public radio station, which is all we have here, don't do much for me.

Lydia said...

@Hattie- KBPS played "The Lark Ascending" one day this week and I lost five pounds!
I don't have an I-Pod yet. It sounds like you are making excellent use of yours. :)

Has anyone else heard "Music of the Spheres" by Mike Oldfield?

Right now?? I'm listening to "Autophilia: or how I learned to stop worrying and love my car" by The Bluetones - a sadly overlooked British indie group

I could be listening to anything in a minute though, as my MP3 is on random...

Today i am also reggae music - though i see myself more as the blues: often miserable, simplistic on the surface but so deep underneath and with a biting humour! xx

im not exactly sure, i forgot to look at that part of the results XD

anyway, the date was january 15th. only 2 weeks away from being 1992 >.>

Lydia. Five pounds! I must listen to it again right now! I could be down 50 pounds in no time!
And I'm classical music,too. Hardly a surprise.

Adam, I got the same results as you--our music is:
"Electronic".
Thanks for this post, Lydia. You rock. Literally.

I love all music, except rap, but then again I don’t consider rap music :)
I used to love getting high and listening to Mozart’s Requiem or Mahler 5th symphony now days I am a family man. I still listen to classical music but in a sober state:)
If you like to listen at music on your computer try this: www.pandorabox.com you will love it guaranteed!

@dmarks- You know, someone else has mentioned that to me but I don't remember who or how long ago. I'll check it out. I'm assuming you like it!

@Pixies- I don't know The Bluetones. I do rely on word of mouth to introduce me to indie groups (they are plentiful and for the most part hidden). Yeah, your writing seems more jazz than reggae to me.

@Adam- As you will note from Lisa's comment you both are Electronic music.
I put your birthday on my calendar...really. :)

@Hattie- We might be onto a new diet. Since you are also classical music and originally from Portland I'm wondering if you might already listen to KBPS online?

@Lisa- I'm glad that Adam had previously copied down the description for Electronic. That's fascinating, full of vitality just like you. :)

@Buddha- Interesting about your prior listening experience with classical. My step-father liked it and so I had exposure via records as a kid. Then I found it again in college, but got high listening to rock instead. When I got sober is when classical music and I merged.
You know, there's actually some rap I prefer over some country!

Oh no! not Jazz!! I'm with Roddy Doyle on that one!!!!

I won't repeat it here - but watch The Commitments if you want to know what i mean! (plus it's a great film)

Lydia said...

@Pixies- I meant blues, for the reasons you had said blues. But now you have me curious about The Commitments and whoever this Roddy Doyle is. New to me, and I'll look for it on DVD.
Have you seen "Coraline"? It's not a movie I'd have had interest in (animation) but one of my favorite bloggers, an accomplished artist, just raved about it at her blog. She said to BE SURE to see it in 3-D. I'm excited because it's coming to our town theater next.
