Movie lines I love:

If you apologize because you are afraid, then you're a child, not a man.

-from To Sir With Love (1967), by teacher Mark Thackeray to student

The film's title song "To Sir, with Love", sung by Lulu, reached number one on the U.S. pop charts, and ultimately was Billboard magazine's #1 pop single for the year, 1967. The movie ranked number 27 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 Best High School Movies. -e-notes Wikipedia

And of course (from a different movie):

"They call me Mr Tibbs!"

And (from same movie):

"I know the laws ofthestateofMississippi thank you."

One of my favorite lyrics ever was "If you wanted the sky, I would write across the sky in letters ten thousand feet high, 'To sir, with love.'"

I also think that 45 was the first record I ever bought!

Brilliant. Love it. It takes courage to feel. Sidney has the courage to feel.xoxo

There's actually a really good version of that song done by 10,000 Maniacs, with Michael Stipe sharing vocals with Natalie Merchant (recorded, I think, at the Clinton inaugural celebration)

Oh, Lydia! This is one of my all-time favourite films. I wanted to be Judy Geeson with her swingy blonde hair and her British accent (plus, my best friend looked exactly like her).

I think you may have given me an idea for a new post on my blog, Poetikat's Blasts From the Past which has just recently moved here:

Come by for a visit!

I absolutely love your Favorite Movie Lines...How they have stayed in the background of our psyches as guideposts. Couldn't even begin to remember how many times I saw The Way We Were,Dr. Zhivago, etc., and this movie??? Dozens. Loved, loved, loved it. Cannot have a better voice whispering in your ear :>)

Does that ever take me back!

OK - i realise that this is extremely silly - but i've just thought of my most favourite line from a movie and it's a joke (of course)

From Monty Python And The Holy Grail (Life Of Brian has more of a plot, but for my money Grail is funnier) - and there are many, many great lines from this movie - but they are trying a witch and John Cleese (as a peasant) cries

"She turned me into a newt!"

(cue embarrassed silence as everyone looks at his clearly non-newt status)

Cleese (looking embarrassed): "I got better"

Cracks me up everytime

oh - and for a serious one:

"try? there is no try: there is only do, or do not do"

Yoda (of course)!

I love this song, though I never saw the movie. I DO love Sidney Potier, though...

YIKES! I am really behind today (yesterday) in replying....sorry, all. ~~~

Fireblossom~ What a great first song to ever buy! I can believe that was your favorite line from the song, as it sounds like something you would write. My own favorite line from the lyrics was "How do you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume?" There is probably something telling in those two choices back then.
The first record I ever bought was this one.

Belette Rouge~ Please see comments above to Fireblossom and analyze us if you read this!

YogaforCynics~ REally?! That music news excites me and I will definitely see if I can find it on youtube. I love Natalie Merchant. Lulu, however, did a damn decent job back on the original. :)

Distracted~ This: How they have stayed in the background of our psyches as guideposts. I love the way you write. Thank you for your comment. :)

Pixies~ Ah me, I am so much a neophyte when it comes to Monty Python anything. It is a hole in my learning, so to speak! I loved the quote-even out of context-and laughed hard.
Yoda's quote is a favorite...actually, anything Yoda ever said is a favorite!

Erin~ Hi! Long time! I am shocked that you, a professor, have not seen this movie... maybe hearing the song again will spur you on to see the movie in the future. I adore Sidney Poitier too - he's one of the great ones.

Hattie~ Missed you squeezed in between the other comments...and am curious what memories this might bring back for you. It was a great film made in what seems a lifetime ago!

Kat~ I certainly am replying to above comments in a bizarre order, which is only indicative of my past 24 hours! What a kick that your best friend looked like Judy...I wonder if you have stayed in touch.
The film was so powerful for me, and obviously was for you.

Your new site will be a treat...here I come! ~~

I'm awful with movie lines (would actually have to search Youtube to refresh my memory), but I love this movie. I first saw it when it came out, when I was in middle school. Always gets me teary!

earthtoholly~ Sorry for not replying sooner...just found this again.
