Assorted quotes from the January 9th birthday gang

What is an adult? A child blown up by age.

Why one man rather than another? It was odd. You find yourself involved with a fellow for life just because he was the one that you met when you were nineteen.

The writer of originality, unless dead, is always shocking, scandalous; novelty disturbs and repels.

One is not born a woman, one becomes one.

-Simone de Beauvoir (French Writer and feminist, 1908-1986)

I have been true to the principles of nonviolence, developing a stronger and stronger aversion to the ideologies of both the far right and the far left and a deeper sense of rage and sorrow over the suffering they continue to produce all over the world.

Action is the antidote to despair.

The easiest kind of relationship is with ten thousand people, the hardest is with one.

-Joan Baez (American singer and songwriter, 1941- )

Nah, the Smithsonian doesn't ask for anything back from Gilligan, ... They haven't dropped that low yet.

-Bob Denver (American comedic actor, 1935-2005)

Don't get the impression that you arouse my anger. You see, one can only be angry with those he respects.

We cannot learn from one another until we stop shouting at one another - until we speak quietly enough so that our words can be heard as well as our voices.

Well, I screwed it up real good, didn't I?

-Richard M. Nixon (37th US President, 1913-1994)

You're either in it for the long haul or you're not.

- Crystal Gayle (American country singer, 1951- )

The future is no place to place your better days.

-Dave Matthews (South-African born American musician and song writer, 1967- )

I want to feel passion, I want to feel pain. I want to weep at the sound of your name. Come make me laugh, come make me cry... just make me feel alive.

-Joey Lauren Adams (American actress, 1968- )

I'm just looking for an angel with a broken wing.

This gives me a lot of confidence in myself. I'm excited, and I can't wait for the years to come.

-Jimmy Page (English rock musician, songwriter, producer, 1944- )

By far the best dressing up outfit I ever had was a wonderful pair of clown dungarees, which my Granny made.

He's lucky to be going out with me.

-Kate Middleton (English photographer, fiance' to Prince William, 1982- )

My mother and me, 1997

I have learned that when two souls meet, two souls meet. Bodies can be so incidental.

Wonderful quotes and photos. Virtually every one calls up certain memories or reflections. Am I correct in thinking it is your birthday? If so, Happy, Happy Birthday! (If I am wrong, then save this wish for when it IS your birthdy!)

I love this thanks- was just out browsing around trying to come to a place of middle ground...( did not intend to rhyme) What is it about
simple black and white photo's that can be so inspiring? I find that first one stunning- Have a great day.

Ahhhh, perfect! Thank you for some inspiring reflections.

Some years ago, hub and I were driving thru Vermont, stopped in one of those quaint towns, saw a park, saw people sitting on blankets, and learned Joan Baez would be singing...just as the sun was setting...beautiful!

I loved every one of these quotes and I love the last one the most. The picture of you and your mom is beautiful. You were very lucky to have her and she you. When I first saw the picture I thought 'peace be the journey'

take care

Fabulous! Love the idea and the quotes. Boy...didn't ever think I'd long to have Richard Nixon's voice in the political fray.

half-life~ Many thanks for your birthday wishes. So far, it has been a great birthday...and there is still dinner out tonight.

mythopolis~ Yes,'tis my birthday and I thank you for your kind wishes.
It was fun collecting the quotes for this post. Some were so widely quoted due to large lives lived. Kate has only the two attributed to her; boy, is that ever going to change....

izzy~ I so agree with you about b&w images being the most powerful. They have understated significance. Thanks for the birthday wishes.

Caren~ I am happy you liked my quote at the end. I went through old journals to find something I would want to share as such.

Kittie~ They are inspiriting reflections for me, too. Glad you enjoyed.
Your memory of the Joan Baez concert is simply beautiful. My husband and I had a similar experience when we read in the paper that she would be giving a free outdoor concert in a nearby town that day. I have seen her in staged concerts twice, but the sweetness of that day outside was great. I cannot believe that she is 70 today.....

Looking to the Stars~ Well, my friend, you came up with the most beautiful quote here in reference to my mother. I thank you so much.

kathew~ What fun to know your sis-in-law shares the Jan. 9th birthday club! I have a second-cousin whom I have never met who also shares the birthday, which reminds me I should send him a message at FB!

Phivos~ Thank you so much for your good wishes. It is not a day in the sun to celebrate, but sunny nonetheless with your commemt.

distracted~ Ain't it the truth? Why, there were actually pages of quite reasonable quotes from which to choose! He undid himself in spite of having one of the best minds around at the time, and certainly rivaling some of the best minds today.

That was very beautiful and, yes, I loved the last one too - the photo of two exquisite ladies.

Wishing you all the best for the year ahead. Happy Birthday ♡

Thank you and thanks to my sis-in-law for sending me this link on my birthday. It was interesting to see who else has the same Jan 9 birthday!! :-) Happy Birthday!!

Owen~ Many thanks for your kind wishes. And I must know which day in January is your birthday! I love that "children of spring love" thought.

susan~ I thank you for your thoughts about the photo of my mother and me.
May this be a good year for us all.
(Love that little heart.)

Susan~ You must be kathew's sis-in-law...she mentioned it being your birthday in her comments. My wishes for your birthday are a bit belated because the day has turned to the next, but I hope it was great and it's an honor to share the day with you!

January 9th birthday here, too! and I really appreciate your wonderful list of accomplished people with whom I share this day. I have lived my whole life with the teasing from my family that I had to share a birthday with Richard Nixon. Much nicer to be able to retort that 'No, I share a birthday with Joan Baez.'

Lydia said...

jaykaym~ Happy Belated Jan. 9th Birthday to you! Oh, yes, we are club full of deep and talented people. Richard Nixon does not define you or me!
Thanks so much for leaving your comment.

What a great post!

Love all the Baez quotes, and Simone's "Why one man rather than another? ..." is so true...sadly. :o/

What a beautiful photo of you and your mom...love both of your expressions.

Happy Birthday, again!

What a beautiful photo with your mother Lydia! I can see such feeling of letting go and "soul" in it. How wonderful. I felt a tear or two looking at you two...wishing and hoping that one day I might get that same feeling and actually be able to do this, before my mother passes on. She's a trooper nowadays...strong inside and when my Dad goes I can see her still carrying on.

Thanks for the wonderful quotes and photos here...meant a lot to me.

Love,
Rhi

P.S. Happy belated Birthday Lydia. Hope you had a wonderful day.

Lydia said...

earthtoholly~ Why, thank you so much! You keyed in on some of the more powerful quotes for me as well.
This shot taken by my husband of my mother and me is one of my treasures. It makes me feel peaceful to look at it.

Rhi~ See comment to holly just above.
I am so touched that you found "soul" in the image; I will remember your description when I look at it.
I do so hope you and your mother can share even one moment like this together. That would be wonderful for both of you. xo
