Sobriety: 26 years

Càrn Mhuinge by Dougie Beck

Ich komme aus meinen Schwingen heim by Rainier Maria Rilke

I come home from the soaring in which I lost myself.
I was song, and the refrain which is God
is still roaring in my ears.

Now I am still
and plain:
no more words.

To the others I was like a wind:
I made them shake.
I’d gone very far, as far as the angels,
and high, where light thins into nothing.

But deep in the darkness is God.

-from Rilke's Book of Hours – Love Poems to God

As I have since this blog's inception, on the day of my sobriety anniversary I publish this treasured Rilke poem, but with a new image each year.

A beautiful photo and poem. And, congratulations on your achievement. One of my children is now approaching his two year anniversary of sobriety. It is the longest he has ever gone without relapsing, and I am hoping he has finally gotten a firmer grip on his life!!! (There were so many years I had a dread I would find him dead of his excesses....)

Rilke has words for things few others do--and this is an especially rich poem. Glad you are with us to enrich our lives by sharing it on this occasion, and many congratulations on a major achievement. I have one I pray will find this path before it's too late.

The picture, the poem, and the occasion they mark are testaments to the best humanity is capable of; the quiet miracles, appreciation for what is, inner beauty and strength for the journey.

Ditto Stickup...

May your quest for clarity and serenity take you far and high. Life alone is enough to be drunk on...

**Dear Friends~ Each of your messages this day meant so much to me. Much love to all of you. ~Lydia**

Deborah and Di~ I read both of your beautiful comments before going to bed and had the loveliest, most peaceful sleep, and woke up feeling so grateful today. Thank you for setting the tone of the day. :)

mythopolis~ Your son has a time in sobriety close to the son of a childhood friend of mine. It took many tries, but this time we are feeling he got it. I will pray for the same kind of healing for your son. btw, one of the reasons I stopped going to AA (which works wonders for many) was because, for me, it was very dangerous to hear people discussing their relapses.

hedgewitch~ Then that one of yours has my prayers now also. Your comment meant a great deal to me.
Yes, this is an especially rich poem and has such deep meaning for me.

Looking to the Stars~ Many thanks to you!

izzy~ Thank you kindly and most of all for sharing. Happy sobriety anniversary to you, belated but with lots of love.

Amber Lee~ Isn't the poem deep and special? I so appreciate your sweet comments.

Fireblossom~ Thank you for being one of my cyber-strengths in the journey!

Stickup Artist~ Every time I read your comment my eyes fill with tears. I cherish your words here so much.

Owen~ And ditto what I wrote to stickup. Many thanks and I'm glad life gave me your friendship.
