Friday Flash 55 — Visions of our shipwreck

Foto Abstracta 2692 Visiones de nuestro naufragio - Visions of our shipwreck, by Leovi

Deep colors sometimes seep
through misty mornings
and we use them to tip-toe
gingerly over the shards
of this icy foundation, a
framework that once buoyed
us, but now only toys with
our sinking sailing skills.

See, there are memories
shining with the sheen of time,
o captain, my captain….and I
salute you for those.

Written for Friday Flash 55 - My post in exactly 55 words - for the G-Man.

Thank you to the extremely artistic Leovi for permission to use a photograph
for a writing prompt, as I missed the Poetics prompt to do so this week at dVerse Poets Pub!

Thoughful poem, Lydia, and a compliment to the picture. (I endorse your blog comment about blogs associated with Google+ accounts. The requirement to join obliges me to refrain from commenting.)

They make a wonderful combination of subtle, multi-layered meaning. Very nicely done, Lydia.

I don't THINK I'm Google+ Let me know if I am. I would hate to make visiting difficult. This is an excellent take on the image - I love the idea of "a framework that once buoyed us"... and "memories shining with the sheen of time". The ending, though, makes me wonder if they are no longer together, but thankful for the time, non-the-less. But then you write "My Captain" which makes me think this couple made it through rough waters. Either way, it made me think! Nicely done.

Brian~ Really thrilled with your comment! Thank you.

Other Mary~ Thanks. It was really difficult to select an image from Leovi's amazing gallery!

Leovi~ Oh, I am so happy that you liked it, and am honored that you placed it with the picture at your blog. Your work is so absolutely amazing!

Helen~ Why, thank you so much!

Doctor FTSE~ Many thanks for your comment about the poem. And thank you for validating my frustration with Google+ regarding comments. Feel free to use my statement or alter to express your own complaints.

Kathe~ Thanks much for those words about the last lines. And, yes, absolutely...Leovi's work is on a level all its own.

Kerry~ Your comment meant a lot to me. Thank you.

Alice Audrey~ Glad you liked those lines!

g-man~ Aw, thank you so much for those kind words. My pleasure. And glad you are not pouting this week. (But you pout so forcefully!!)

susan~ Thank you. I thought you would appreciate Leovi's work.

Margaret~ Thankfully, friend, it appears you are not on Google+. I can't figure out why some accounts on Google+ are totally impossible to access for comments when not a member, yet a few others are. It is a conundrum, and who has time for that?!
I follow your train of thought about the couple. It seems there is more to the story.....

Mama Zen~ I'm sailing away on your comment now. :)

Nice. I like the feel of all of the opposites mixed in with the consistent sailing theme.

Beautiful. So much of this resembles life. Walking carefully over the shards of the mistakes and hurts. Yet the lessons which derive from those memories hold their own beauty. (Hugs)Indigo

Leovi~ My pleasure, most definitely! Thank you again for your beautiful photography.

Vanessa~ Hmm. Your comment made me consider the opposing forces in the act of sailing a boat! Thanks!

Misterio Vida~ Oh my, I have not visited your blog for a long time either. I really appreciated you being here and commenting.

Indigo~ You are so one in a million, who would mention the lessons derived hold their own beauty. Many thanks and hugs.

ok - so it finally hit me what this image made me think of, and apologies in advance, but i once heard a story about Andy Warhol getting his assistants at the Factory to urinate on metal and getting them to drink certain things first to affect the colours that stained the "canvas"

it also looks a bit like light refracted in a puddle of oil - so i guess i can also see the twisted metal of a shipwreck refracted here

there are memories
shining with the sheen of time - that's my favourite line

ha ha - i knew it!!

The absolute first thing that came to mind when i saw your poem was that i was convinced George Harrison, or possibly Tom Petty had done a song called "The Wreck Of The Hesperus"

Turned out it was Harrison:

I'm not the wreck of the Hesperus
Feel more like the Wall of China
Getting old as Methuselah
Feel tall as the Eiffel Tower

I'm not a power of attorney
But I can rock as good as Gibraltar
Ain't no more no spring chicken
Been plucked but I'm still kicking
But it's alright, it's alright

Poison penmen sneak, have no nerve to speak
Make up lies then they leak 'm out
Behind a pseudonym, the rottenness in them
Reaching out trying to touch me

Met some Oscars and Tonys
I slipped on a pavement oyster
Met a snake climbing ladders
Got out of the line of fire
(But it's alright)

Brainless writers gossip nonsenses
To others heads as dense as they is
It's the same old malady
What they see is faulty

I'm not the wreck of the Hesperus
Feel more like Big Bill Broonzy
Getting old as my mother
But I tell you I got some company
(But it's alright)

But it's alright, it's alright
But it's alright, it's alright
It's alright, alright
It's alright

Pixies~ No one I know has as much information about our rock/pop times as you do! All I can say about that Warhol story is Ish!

How could you remember that a song such as that had been composed? (for answer see my first sentence, of course) The lyrics are nutty, like some other Beatles' songs. Harrison, being Harrison the philosopher.

Thank you for enlightening me once again!

Don't Feed The Pixies said...

i investigated further and now know where i know the song from - it was on the album Cloud Nine, which i used to own on vinyl

Lydia said...

Pixies~ "used to own" in reference to an old record is such a sad line!!!
