Carpe Diem Haiku Kai: Solitude (Kodoku)

Christmas music plays
We select prized ornaments
Just the cat and me

         ~

Old handwritten note
"New York childhood Christmases"
Beaded star for tree

         ~

As far as a star
As near as these memories
Tender solitude

Written for Carpe Diem Haiku Kai: Solitude (Kodoku)

The last haiku has a great grasp of the paradoxical qualities of nostalgia: that sense of loss that brings a glow with it - and it's beautifully phrased, too

That first haiku I love the most, but all three are beauties.

Ah, moments of beauty.

Why do the pasts seem so much better than the present celebrations of Christmas? Perhaps it is the frills and happy that we make up and associate.
So the goal is to make present the best of the past.
