Images: a poem

Having blogged yesterday about Astoria and Astoria Column, I decided to post this sentimental poem that I wrote long ago. I truly appreciate Tom Rieder for allowing me to publish his beautiful photo taken from Astoria Column in 2007. I found it at Google Picasa and visited his blog,
Traveling Talisman, seeking permission to use it. Oh the irony to find Flat Stanley listed there (25 times!) under his section titled "Categories"...

Discoverers, we, no less enthusiastic
than Lewis and Clark
had an easier journey than they,
-for Chrysler's sake!

The days since my mind circles
through thoughts and finds
crystal images from
Astoria Column:

there ancestors created government
and we continue the dream

here all nature is in movement
yet appears motionless from the hill

where the Columbia
having collected offerings
from smaller volunteers

commits to the Pacific

how she and I spent time
analyzing these things while
breathing deeply the autumn air

where at sunset
I noticed a likeness

in the dazzling shine on
distant silvery waters

and

the gossamer radiance of
my mother's glistening gray hair.

  1. The column rocks!
    And so does your poem

    I'm feeling nostalgic now
    For all those little things
    Like Flat Stanley
    That we did
    Over the years

    Growing crystals
    Polishing rocks
    The egg car race
    Tee shirts
    Cup cakes
    Valentines
    Post Card Chains
    Model Rockets
    Catching Frogs
    Newts
    Tadpoles
Hatching 11 Monarch Butterflies on a string in the bedroom one fall

    I miss those things
I miss my children growing up
I even miss the hard times…

    Nice River
    The Columbia
    And a wonderful setting

    Thanks for that

Today I was inspired to go out and get some pics of the Mohawk where I go walking
I added some to my post.

  5. Bobbb,
When I receive one of your poem comments it always makes my day so special.

    WW,
I saw her and I thought she looked like a great gray cat. Don't you think that steel gray cats seem to have a special attitude about life and the people they own? (thanks for liking the poem :)

    For the People,
I showed your blog to my husband last night because I'd told him about it over the weekend. He was most impressed.

    Mibsy,
Thanks much for your comments. I guess I'm overly sensitive to sentimental because Mike's parents criticize that trait. Pooh on 'em!
