here's to e.e. cummings

here's to opening and upward, to leaf and to sap
and to your self whose eyes smell of the sound of rain

and here's to silent certainly mountains; and to
a disappearing poet of always; and to snow
and to morning; and to morning's beautiful friend
twilight (and a first dream called ocean)

  1. thanks for this lovely poem, Lydia. i need a little more poetry in my life. Been too busy working! you've inspired me to write down my jottings about first snowfall here in Canada.

  2. Honour,
I'm really glad your work schedule gave you enough pause to post your current poem at your blog. Fantastic. It'll be fun to read your snowfall poem if you choose to share.
How cool that you saw e.e. cummings house.....I didn't know it was in NYC. Next visit!

  3. This is a lovely poem; the picture you chose to illustrate it also. Looking at the snow and reading the words "here's to opening and upward, to leaf and to sap" reminds me that even if the world seems dead, still there is all that quiet activity, things ticking over until spring.

  6. Angela,
Affected me the same way. :)

    Bird,
What a beautiful way to describe the life inside winter. :)

    Buddha,
I agree about the poem and the photo being perfect. I've enjoyed looking at this post more than I do most of mine! :)

    Jennifer,
The two seemed perfect for one another. I had selected another shot when I saw this one and Oooooh! I'd love to visit Russia at wintertime. :)

  7. That intense light coming through the trees is beautiful. The poem is a perfect match. Besides the ideas evoked, I mostly like the way in which they are portrayed, playing with words. Thanks.

  8. Carlos,
I didn't change the post on Sunday because, like you, I have reveled in the light beyond the trees. And the color of white of the benches in the snow. The shot really appeals to me. And I agree about e.e. cummings play with words. I periodically memorize individual poems. This one has burrowed deep into my soul and I will learn it next.

  9. Sounds nice, fond memories of the Sound of Music Tour! Julie Andrews is in Vienna at the moment. She’s going to host the Vienna Philharmonic's annual New Year's concert. Andrews hosts New Year's Concert

  10. O, Francessa, I will definitely be watching. I haven't missed one of those broadcasts for decades, no kidding. I guess Walter Cronkite has bowed out as host. He's done a wonderful job all these years....
