Songs My Mother Taught Me . . . Stumbling

Last year in honor of my mother I posted a series of Songs My Mother Taught Me. I had some left over that I didn't use, and I may remember more later, so I will continue as the mood strikes me. And the mood strikes me now.

She used to giggle about Stumbling. It was a song that made her silly. She hummed it once while my stepfather, a really fine dancer, led her around the living room in an impromptu Fox Trot. And then they laughed. So, the song makes me happy when I think about it.

I wonder if it has ever been used to accompany the Fox Trot in Dancing With the Stars. It would really test the skill of the dancers because Stumbling is a musical romp!

Here is an accomplished ukulele player doing justice to Stumbling.

Great version of Stumbling by HefTone. HefTone's Channel at youtube

And this is most likely the version my mother knew as a young girl.
I would title this video.......
Antidote for a Stressful Day

fuzzbear6240 uploaded this at youtube and said: Victor (BW) 18899-A "Stumbling" Fox Trot (by Zez Confrey) Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. First issued circa early 1922
Played on my VV-50 (Victrola phonograph), in the park.

Interestingly I found a song with the same title (but different song altogether) that was done around 2008 by TRUSTcompany, a band I am not familiar with. Stumbling by this band is called "The best song ever made in Alternative Rock History" in the youtube upload that you can hear here. Here here! it really is excellent alternative rock and maybe could be called.......Antidote for a Boring Date.

  1. My that's a cheerful ditty! My mother had a lot of those old 78s, including many Paul Whiteman ones. On that recording, even with the poor sound quality, the chipper happy go lucky spirit of the tune comes through. The ukelele player is good, too, and also very pleasant looking!

  2. I remember Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, but Stumblin is not a piece that I can recall.

It would be a fun tempo to dance to and I can see why your mother and step-father laughed as they danced the fox trot around the room.

Hattie~ I agree with you that it is cheerful and that the ukulele player is a nice-looking guy. You might like his many other videos at his youtube channel that I linked. :)

Darlene~ I think it would be fun to dance to also....that is, if I knew how to do the Fox Trot. I did notice that there are lessons online!

    Phivos~ Happy you enjoyed it!

Rhi~ O, there's the birthday girl! Hope you are having a great day. My "surprise" was only that I remembered it was your birthday and was going to wish you a happy birthday at your blog. Pretend you have a bouquet of tulips from me!

  5. Lydia! Speaking of blog changes--I absolutely love what you are doing here!

I also loved the ukele version of stumbling (loved both but this was my fave). Ukeleles are such happy, funny little instruments.

Love the rainbow of color here!

  7. Nancy~ It is a fun memory.
The victrola isn't mine, but belongs to the lucky person who uploaded this sweet video at youtube. I bet they are hard to find, even in the antiques market...

  8. A ukelele and then Paul Whiteman on a 78 in a Victrola, you couldn't have chosen better, Lydia.
