The mystery which binds me still . . .

Walk Alone by True Bavarian
Walk Alone by True Bavarian

Alone
    ~by Edgar Allen Poe

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were — I have not seen
As others saw — I could not bring
My passions from a common spring —
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow — I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone —
And all I lov'd — I lov'd alone —
Then — in my childhood — in the dawn
Of a most stormy life — was drawn
From ev'ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still —
From the torrent, or the fountain —
From the red cliff of the mountain —
From the sun that 'round me roll'd
In its autumn tint of gold —
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass'd me flying by —
From the thunder, and the storm —
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view —

  1. I read that Poe considered himself a poet first, and he is on my short list of favorites. Besides the imagery, his verse flows so well.

I wrote a poem about Poe that's on my "best of" on my sidebar. If memory serves, it's called "Lies."

  3. Do you feel that? I haven't for alone for a long time, at least since I 'felt brave enough to (be) gray'.

  5. Wow! I am stunned to be reading this post and totally relating to Edgar Allen Poe's poem...sounds a lot like my feelings as a child growing up in these strange and weird circumstance that I had to keep witnessing...and yet it brought me to the "road less traveled" throughout my life I am sure. Finding my "space" my "solitude" and seemingly to be leading the creative life, even through my ridiculous life stories!
I think I want to save this poem it means a lot to me and I can tell most definitely meant a lot to you.

    Love Rhi

  8. Fireblossom~ Why am I not surprised that you wrote a poem about Poe? (I will read it.) His considering himself a poet first is also not a surprise after reading this one in particular.

Darlene~ My pleasure. (I love it too.)

Stafford Ray~ Yes, I do feel that when I touch base inward. It is not the same feeling as what solitude (that I love) brings, but scratch the surface and it is still there.

Manuela~ I saw this captivating image and went in search for the right poem. Couldn't believe how perfect Poe's poem was.

Rhi~ If you read my reply to Stafford's comment above it pretty much sums up how you describe feeling also. :)

Roxana~ You'll remember this poem by Poe when you take pictures of clouds? I imagine he would be quite pleased to know it. :)

Nancy~ Yes, I agree. Great to see you and I'm on my way to your blog now...been way too long.
