Pardon me, this way is a very nice way.

Some of you may remember the image of this outstanding-in-its-field scarecrow that I posted last October. The good folks who created that scarecrow have outdone themselves this year!

The setting is about eight miles out of Silverton on the country road into Salem. At the intersection on one corner is an evangelical church that does not factor in the outdoor autumn decorating extravaganza. But on the other three corners and also a bit up one of the roadways these great scarecrows recently appeared.

I made a special drive last Saturday to get these shots because rain is expected at the end of this week....... a sad weather prediction for a glorious scarecrow here for only a flash of time and just looking for a little love and admiration.

Scarecrow: Pardon me, this way is a very nice way.
Dorothy: Who said that?
[Toto barks at scarecrow]
Dorothy: Don't be silly, Toto. Scarecrows don't talk.

Logical consequences are the scarecrows of fools and the beacons of wise men.
~Thomas Huxley

“That proves you are unusual, returned the Scarecrow; and I am convinced the only people worthy of consideration in this world are the unusual ones. For the common folks are like the leaves of a tree, and live and die unnoticed.”
 ~Lyman Frank Baum quote

  1. O fabulous! We once had a decorate your scarecrow competition in the village - it was great fun, the winner was one dressed as an Hula girl!

  3. Rain or shine
    These fields are mine
    To watch over
    To care for
    While I have the time
    I come to know
    Each and every crow
    As the fallow fields
    Await the snow

Good to see you again - Love the pics...

  4. It's always a delight to see art in surprising settings. These are wonderful scarecrows and I'm glad you took the time to get good photos before they disappeared in wind and rain.

  5. I have no idea what some of them are supposed to be protecting, but they look awfully cute.

  6. Love these. When my daughter was little we used to visit a pumpkin farm that used to set the pumpkins up in fairytale scenes, Hanzel and Gretal, The Three Little Pigs, Rapunzel, etc. You could spend an hour or better just taking in the different scenes. (Hugs)Indigo

  7. madamebutterfly~ I am trying to envision a hula scarecrow! There are so many possibilities for scarecrow costumes and that sounds like a great one. :)

Fireblossom~ he he... He was a grand scarecrow, eh?

Citizen of Earth~ Have missed you, and that is in part due to my lack of regular visits to your blog also. It is always a fine occasion to have a comment from you.

susan~ Interesting you would mention "wind" because the weather report tonight mentions that as being in the mix of this weekend's stormy days. Poor scarecrows!

Snowbrush~ Yeah, the Mary Poppins one is actually in a grassy triangle that has sheep in it sometimes. And the field is barren right now. But the kingly one is definitely protecting a small vineyard. And they are all cute, I agree. (Thank you for following my blog!)

Indigo~ How enchanting that must have been to see fairytale scenes full of pumpkin characters. Great idea...and I can tell great memories, too. :)

  10. Rachel Fox~ I love the word "village"! Madamebutterfly used it in her comments, too. The competition sounds wonderful. It doesn't happen around here and I wish it would. These scarecrows are labors of love and could win a ribbon or two!

Brian Miller~ Oh, I think he is a very good king and a big fan of Willamette Valley Fruit Co. I am inclined to believe (they sell marvelous frozen pies). The mexican on the tractor is stupendous and a real surprise as a bonus scarecrow down the road a piece from the group (he really is outstanding in his field).

  11. earlier in the summer i drove through a small village outside Stratford-upon-Avon and they had put up a couple of figures in odd locations - like a model of a woman cleaning a step and another of a showjumper taking a horse over someone's fence - sadly i wasn't able to stop and take pictures: but these are great fun also

  12. secret, fragile skies~ They are wonderful and I feel so sad that this weekend a major rainstorm is coming. Ah well, we loved them well...

    Phivos~ Absolutely, yes, beautiful scarecrows!

Pixies~ There is "village" mentioned again...magical-sounding to me! The figures must have been marvelous and I sure wish you had captured them with your excellent photographic eye. :)

  13. Quite a collection of pumpkinheads ! Love the Baum quote... still have all of the Oz books that he wrote on my shelves, and wish I had early editions with color plates of the entire collection, both his and Ruth Plumly Thompson's continuation of the series. The books were lovely to behold...

  14. Owen~ Wow, you have all of the Oz books...that is wonderful! I am not aware of Ruth Plumly Thompson so once again you will be sending me on a research expedition. While at it I will see if there are photos of those color plates in the early editions.
