Hans-Joachim Herr

He quit school, then gauged his success by which bell foundry forms and machinery he could lift or push. Once, at a bus stop, he described his job for a classy stranger. She quoted:
. . . For whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
Today, he teaches English literature six blocks from the bell foundry.

Written for Friday Flash 55 - My post in exactly 55 words - for the G-Man.

  3. Your 55 does a great job of pinpointing the vagaries of fate, and the winds of choice and chance that fill our sails. Loved it, Lydia.

  9. He changed
    from working with his hands
    to working with his mind,
    at least in part.
    Though I bet
    he never forgot
    those ancient skills.

    Still, she rang his chimes
    by quoting Donne
    and could not
    have done anything
    better for
    him.
