Friday Flash 55 — last stand huddles

they huddle by Fighter Ross
they huddle by
Fighter Ross

You know how sometimes when you are trying to pee —
but can't —
you think of running water?

Here we are, the last stand of old growth
in this forest.
When you see us standing in the ice storm
think of us as saplings among
thousands of elders —
protected
from winter,
oblivious
to the
summer axe.

Written for Friday Flash 55 - My post in exactly 55 words - for the G-Man.

  3. Oh Lydia .. this certainly gives us pause for thought. Oregon is so luscious, I hate it when our trees are destroyed.

  5. oh my this is so powerful, it has the rawness and evocative power of a haiku, but translated into our type of western sensitivity... it has blown me away! if only we could be that oblivious to the time's axe, Lydia...

  6. Brian~ Yes, Guru, you are right. :)

    Amber Lee~ Thank you!

Helen~ I know you have seen stands like this in your travels around our state. It always depresses me. Much to love and save here.

G-Man~ You are so funny and kind and I appreciate that I am saved to your favorites so much. :)

Roxana~ You are a wonder. I had not even thought of it in terms of haiku until your comment pointed me there.

  7. Lydia, I'm so glad you got your link fixed. I always love what you write. This is a powerful piece from the opening line. I absolutely love the photo and mourn the dimnishing stands of virgin white pine in Michigan. And soon to come again, the summer axe.

  8. "Oblivious to the summer axe."

    How sadly perceived, yet truthfully.

Christmas blessings, and Bear hugs, from the hibernating Bear.

  9. Yvonne~ Your comments are always so supportive. Many thanks to you.

Rob-bear~ The least a sleepy bear deserves for looking out from his hibernation is something cheery to read. Sorry this was not that.
