Before winter leaves us I wanted to share a photograph of my toddler mother with her family at the Boardwalk in Atlantic City in late winter/early spring of 1916.
I have some vintage clothing from that era saved by Nellie, my grandmother, in a marvelous cedar chest. Her hat, unfortunately, is not among the items. Does it look familiar to some of you?

ReplyDeleteI loved the old photo of your family--but I really love old photos. Recently, I have been going through my mother's old family photo albums, looking for material for my book and I have been entranced by the seriousness in which everyone took the photo shoots in the olden days.

ReplyDeleteYou are fortunate, Lydia, to have such a delightful family image to review, think about the people in the photo. Some years ago, since I have none like this, I began collection other people's old photos.

Your memoir will be even richer with the addition of some of your old family photos. I'm glad you have them to select favorites.
@Francessa- Yeah, it's some kind of crazy hat, for sure. So strange to see it because my grandmother was not a flamboyant individual at all....but I guess she had a side to her that she didn't show often.
I'll show you the cedar chest contents someday..... :)
@Darlene- The toddler in the photo is my mother, not me! She told stories so frequently that I sometimes felt "as if" I lived her life, but I didn't experience this scene other than second hand! :)
@Lisa- I'm doing fine, thanks! I'm happy that you liked the photo and, absolutely, long live that Flying Nun.
@Naomi- I think you have such a deep feeling for others' old photos because you see them as special. Too often they are taken for granted or tossed away. If you feel a kindred spark with one in particular there must be a reason for that.....
@Buddha- I really really like hats too. They are not only classy, perky, exotic, sassy, mysterious (you name it), but they shield us from the sun. So what's not to like? .... oh, I forgot what they do to hair!
