Cirrus — dVerse Open Link Night

Cirrus

A pure wisp of white with pink radar ears
Huge golden eyes too wise for her years

Contented purr rumbles sound from her soul
Capacity food level found in her bowl

Stereo-perched strikes statue sleekness
A focused Pentax her only weakness

Her peaceful refinement my heart did capture
I share her world. I know cat rapture.

For dVerse Poets Pub Open Link Night. There are many wonderful poems at the link!

I wrote this poem about one of my favorite-ever cats. It was published in Cats Magazine decades ago. Cirrus lived for 15 years, dying near Thanksgiving time. I have never gotten over losing her, not really, as she was with me during a tumultuous time in my life and I am not sure how I would have fared without her devotion.

  1. And if you know that, it's a gosh darned good start. Though my special companion was a dog, I know just what you're talking about here. I tell Bosco all the time that he and Sundance (my old favorite) are my Number 1 and Number 1A. :-)

  2. I enjoyed reading about Cirrus, Lydia. I understand such a love and appreciation of a pet (though I have my DOGS). It is neat that your poem was actually published, as it really immortalizes her. I like the idea of 'cat rapture,' as it expresses exactly what you mean!!

  3. Sweet. The final two lines are pure purrrfection. You compress and rhyme it I think the way a cat would prefer. Your Cirrus looks like my first cat Camille, though the endearment is closer to the heart stolen by my calico Belle. - Brendan

  8. Our pets have so much to teach us. We lost our first dog the day after Thanksgiving a few years ago. It is so hard. Perfect name for your special cat.

  9. It's nice to remember. We lost Clyde a Scottish Fold some years back. Nothing seems the same again. Love reading on Cirrus. Nice take Lydia!

  11. Something cirrus is always cloudy. Like a cat. Who can truly fathom the mind of a cat?

Happy Thanksgiving! Blessings and Bear hugs, too!

  12. It wasn't until I looked a second time that I saw she was being held by your outstretched hand and arm. Feeling cat rapture, indeed.
