Images: a poem

Having blogged yesterday about Astoria and Astoria Column, I decided to post this sentimental poem that I wrote long ago. I truly appreciate Tom Rieder for allowing me to publish his beautiful photo taken from Astoria Column in 2007. I found it at Google Picasa and visited his blog,
Traveling Talisman, seeking permission to use it. Oh the irony to find Flat Stanley listed there (25 times!) under his section titled "Categories"...

Discoverers, we, no less enthusiastic
than Lewis and Clark
had an easier journey than they,
-for Chrysler's sake!

The days since my mind circles
through thoughts and finds
crystal images from
Astoria Column:

there ancestors created government
and we continue the dream

here all nature is in movement
yet appears motionless from the hill

where the Columbia
having collected offerings
from smaller volunteers

commits to the Pacific

how she and I spent time
analyzing these things while
breathing deeply the autumn air

where at sunset
I noticed a likeness

in the dazzling shine on
distant silvery waters

and

the gossamer radiance of
my mother's glistening gray hair.
