Movie lines I love:

Life should be lived on the edge of life. You have to exercise rebellion: to refuse to tape yourself to rules, to refuse your own success, to refuse to repeat yourself, to see every day, every year, every idea as a true challenge - and then you are going to live your life on a tightrope.

-from Man on Wire (2008), by Philippe Petit, highwire artist extraordinaire

2009: Oscar for Best Documentary, Features
         numerous other awards 2008-2009

And below. A song and video that have nothing to do with the documentary Man on Wire, but still seem apropros ......(We have tickets to see Leonard Cohen perform in Portland on December 8th and I am quite beside myself with anticipation) . . . . . .

L.C. is one of the truly unique and deeply gifted songwriters there has ever been. I've got a whole stack of songs I've written deliberately in his style (and that's why I don't post them). I've been listening to him since my late teens. I was already a huge Laura Nyro fan, and they were on the same label. So, I started wondering who this Cohen was. I bought "Songs From A Room" and that was it. He has only gotten better with age.

That movie has been on my Netflix list for ages and I still haven't gotten around to it--even though I really want to. I might just bump it up on the queue right now...

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!!!

So envious - i desperately wanted to see Man On Wire - but it was on limited release and my local Art House cinema (IE showing small films) didn't have it.

Actually it's on-site at a local university. It used to be really good for odd little films: French road movies about the bleakness of existence, Ukranian animation about people being chased by buildings. I saw The Motorcycle Diaries there (top film) and was disappointed they didn't show Man On Wire

Fireblossom~ That is so amazing that you have written songs in Cohen's style. I was a lover of his music in high school without knowing they were his songs I loved. One day I wondered who wrote that? (pretty sure it was Bird on a Wire sung by Judi Collins) and saw his name, then saw his name as the composer of more and more of the songs I adored. I agree he gets better with age...his CD Ten New Songs is one of my favorites.
I have another blogging friend who is a major fan of Laura Nyro's and mentioned your comment to her after her latest post of Nyro's music. She is Dreamweaver.

Kim~ Yes, do bump it up the queue! I am not yet on Netflix, but this film was for the longest time on my "must-see" list. Finally grabbed it off the shelf at the video store last month and OH, WOW! I am still in awe.

kj~ Oh, you! First grade was so young to find enlightenment, my friend. :)

Pixies~ You would love it more than you think you would love it! Do you have a DVD player at home? and if so can you rent the DVD? Or do you have Netflix? In other words, is it out-of-the-question for you to access it? If so, email me and we can figure out how to get a DVD to you (if you have a player, etc.)

I need to see this film! You have great taste in films. I am loving this series.xoxo

Belette Rouge~ Aw, thank you for saying that. I hope people don't think I'm being lazy by running this series, but it really is suiting my mood(s) while my muse tries to come up with some idea for this week's Magpie Tales writing prompt. Not looking promising. In any case, I won't continue this series beyond Thanksgiving...

lydia - was it sponsored/financed by Film4?

If so it will definately be on channel 4 sooner or later - C4 have a film branch that often fund smaller films.

Sadly USA DVDs may not work in the UK with out a universal machine

Pixies~ That is interesting to learn that the systems are different. Too bad really. Does that mean that Amazon.com.uk sells USA DVDs that you in the UK cannot play?

I cannot tell is Film4 has anything to do with the film, in a quick look. Here is the link to the film's website MANONWIRE. Perhaps you can test further.

Hmm. That third still photo with the airliner is sure creepy. I think I'm going to try to put it out of my mind...

I loved this movie too and just watched it last week! Another really great movie I just saw, also very inspirational with great lines was "Sketches of Frank Gehry" by Sydney Pollack. An artistic genius and wonderful about how he broke away from the style of architecture that was all around him and created his own style. I am not usually into architecture at all but loved this movie. It really inspired me in the same way that Man on Wire did!

love, Erika

bfk~ The one I put out of my mind is the top one. I look at that wire and just lose it!

Erika~ Fun synchronicity that you just saw the movie last week. It seems to me that La Belette Rouge wrote about the Frank Gehry movie at her blog. She is in my blogroll. I may search to see what she said about it (if it was indeed at her blog that I read about it!). I am intrigued by your review of the film and would like to see it.
