Watching the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade

I posted this shot three years ago and am dusting it off for another go this St. Patrick's Day, with the slight alteration of colorizing the shamrock on Helen K's name badge. There they were, Helen and George, in a crowd of thousands, wearing name tags. For some reason it touches me even now.

It was a fine and fun day there in New York City in 1989 and I am glad I have it to remember because I am not much in the mood for celebrating this year.

This year is the 250th anniversary of the NYC St. Pat's Parade! Visit the official website to watch a live webstream of the parade.

It is definitely a day of mixed emotions for me, with the tragic events still unfolding. My mother's side are all NYC Irish...and my gandfather looked quite a lot like 'George' in the photo...right down to the cap!

PS. I have twin grand daughters born on this day...now that's the luck of the Irish!!

I didn't feel it either. No green cloths so skipping down the hall stateing happy green beer day. It's not the time, although we must be thankful for what we have.

mythopolis~ Reading about your roots really made me smile today! And how priceless to have twin granddaughters born on St. Pat's Day! Wonderful.

Frosty Duncan~ I did wear a t-shirt that is a lackluster shade of teal. And I bought a loaf of Irish Soda Bread at the store. Everyone I encountered today seemed to be only going through the paces...

I live in an area with many undergraduate students who still enjoy any excuse to get drunk. With all the news reading and video watching I'd completely forgotten it was St. Patrick's Day until our usual long walk found us on one of the local shopping streets and we saw kids wearing green face paint and shamrock hats. Seize the day is the motto of the young.

susan~ You sure pegged the mindset of the undergrad student. What university is in your city? I will look if I remember!
How interesting to read a bit about St. Pat's Day in Canada.

Hah! I came back and noticed your question. Halifax has 6 major post secondary schools: Dalhousie University, St. Mary's University, King's College University, NS College of Art and Design University, Northumberland College, Mt. St. Vincent University. Considering Dalhousie has a student population of 50k you can see this is a major college town.

Take care :-)
