Ringneck Doves visited our fence this week

And anon there came in a dove at a window, and in her mouth there seemed a little censer of gold, and therewithal there was such a savour as all the spicery of the world had been there.
- Sir Thomas Malory (English Author, 1470-1471)

O thou undaunted daughter of desires!
By all thy dower of lights and fires;
By all the eagle in thee, all the dove;
By all thy lives and deaths of love;
By thy large draughts of intellectual day.
 -Richard Crashaw (English Poet known for religious verse
of vibrant stylistic ornamentation and ardent faith. 1613-1649)

Hate shuts her soul when dove-eyed mercy pleads.
 -Charles Sprague

And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
-Bible quote

Society, friendship, and love,
Divinely bestowed upon man,
Oh, had I the wings of a dove,
How soon would I taste you again!
 William Cowper (English Poet, one of the most widely read English poets of his day, 1731-1800)

Indigo~ Oh, I am so glad to read that it made you smile. :)

Promising Poets Parking Lot~ (Still loving your fun name)...Yes, they are cute!

Owen~ Wow, that you could use "dovetail" so beautifully in your comments is simply remarkable to me! Thanks much.

Looking to the Stars~ I saw them as a special message of peace regarding certain outside family "issues" ....all I can say is: Send More Doves!

Citizen of Earth~ Aren't they a special pair? They stayed the longest time, even with one of our cats perched upon an outside window ledge nearby.

What wonderful pictures and accompanying quotations. Your pair of doves are exactly the same as a pair that visit us at Dalamory! But I've never been quick enough to get photos. The doves always bring a smile to my face and a lift to my day - as you do with your blog. Every Blessing

Andressa~ Thank you for the smile! :)

Freda~ I am pleased you enjoyed the post, and I thank you for your kind comments. It sounds as if you see doves frequently. This was a first-ever visit from them in our yard. There is a flock that is kept by residents in our town, and they fly in the early evening (maybe morning too) all together, returning to their secure enclosed aviary. This pair must be members of that flock...who knows why they decided to stop on our fence and stay for about 1/2 hour!

Gorgeous! I have two Mourning Doves living next door to me lately. I've named them Sal and Erma.

They are lovely and I'm glad they stayed around long enough for you to get the excellent photos. Do I see camellia in bloom?

The birds I remember best from Portland, besides our hummers, were the stellar jays. I'd never seen anything like them before or since.

Olga~ Thank you so much for your kind comments!

Kim~ Sal and Erma are the quintessential names for two doves, most definitely. I hope they become long-term neighbors of your. :)

susan~ Yes, that is camellia. It is actually a tree it is so old, nearly as tall as the two-story house. Whoever was responsible for selecting plants for this yard that we now own wins my respect...there is a sweet array of plants with white blossoms.
I love Stellar Jays, and they live just up the hill from us - but because we are that little bit lower we have Scrub Jays. They are dear birds too, but Stellar Jays are majestic. Stellar even!

they are sooo lovely! the Malory quote is sublime and i adore the way light seems to form halos around them, it is mesmerizing...

oh, and i had to remember a great poem, by a common love of ours :-)
i hope you'll enjoy it as much as i do:

The Dove

I saw the dove come down, the dove with the
green twig, the childish dove out of the storm and
flood. It came towards me in the style of the Holy Spirit
descending. I had been sitting in a cafe for twenty-five
years waiting for this vision. It hovered over the great
quarrel. I surrendered to the iron laws of the moral universe which
make a boredom out of everything desired. Do not surrender,
said the dove. I have come to make a nest in your shoe. I
want your step to be light.

Leonard Cohen

Kathe~ "What a gift from the sky" is a lovely expression for how I felt! Thank you!

Roxana~ There have been times when I am sure that we have met and are friends beyond the confines of the blogosphere. This is one of them...I thank you for sharing the Leonard Cohen poem that I never knew before now, and that is so perfect, so touching that I simply treasure it. Thank you!
