Impressions
That secret part of the country road, I know
the pleasure of its narrow curving calling
that broadens my scope — and, as it
meanders, it straightens my thinking.
While hiding streaks of halcyon light
how rolling hills peek back at me! How
the grasses sing into my open windows!
How midsummer forgets every autumn here.

Captures the moment well of the calm before the fall

smiles...really lovely imagery...country roads, you in my neck of the woods...smiles...have traveled quite a many...you put me right there....
Nice... I love the ending.
The poet in me just loves "narrow curving calling". I had to repeat it a bunch of times, just because.
I also love that, as it meanders, it straightens your thinking. Then the celebration and in-the-moment feeling of the rest. You're such a treat to read.
I do love this; roads that sweep like that are great! and so is the suggestion of grass singing- :)
Gorgeous!
You couldn't improve on this if you worked on it for months--it's beautiful, intuitive and the poetry is shining all through it--I love everything everyone else has quoted, but my fave is the image in the last line, that really nails the essence of the natural world, makes it live.
Ahhhh...
But those memories will be refreshed all too soon I'm afraid.
Loved your foreboding 55 Lydia
A Masterpiece!
Thanks for playing, and have a Kick Ass Week-End
Ah, the great perks of a long ride in the country! Only part of my daily commute I enjoy.
Enjoy your weekend!
"How midsummer forgets every autumn here." Lovely and true throughout. Brava, Lydia!
At one point during our long trip from there to here we drove along a little road much like the one you describe. We wondered if we'd crossed to another dimension.

Some of my most profound internal experiences have occurred on road trips throughout Southern Idaho - broadened scope and straightened thinking, indeed.
