Growing wild in rare mountains,
rarely tamed in gardens.
Enjoyed as food by animal and man.
Tree-climbed by beast,
as scaffolding by worker.
Clean natural green —
rhymes with shampoo.
Construction hues whisper honey,
pistachio, black-brown.
Shares its name with the first
certified, sustainable
sushi restaurant in the world* —
(in Portland, Oregon).
It is bamboo.

bamboo is cool...we found a wild patch as kids in the woods by my grammas house and thought it exotic and magic...

Brian~ I love bamboo. We have one in a huge pot that we moved from our condo when we bought this house in 1998. Keeping it confined has so far been a good deal for it and us. :)
izzy~ No, izzy, not bamboo sushi! That's what I thought too when I found the site. But it is the name of the restaurant only, not a menu item that I could find!
Missy~ I really appreciate your comment. Thanks!
G-Man~ Hey, I'm not showing off with those hyper-links. I just don't want to get into trouble for not giving credit where it's due!
dmarks~ Now you got me with that one. I will have to go back and refresh my memory (didn't see all of them). What fun to see you again!
Shakira~ I have two small bamboo plants in my house (one foot tall) and a big one outside. Aren't they great? Such beauty and personality, I think.
What a cool 55, Lydia. Pandas everywhere are drooling!
Yet another reason to come visit Oregon!
Our next door neighbor in California had a stand of bamboo in her backyard. We used to pretend it was a jungle.
Great poem with a cleverly done surprise ending. I tried growing bamboo on our Portland balcony one year but unfortunately it wasn't happy there.
Just a few days ago we watched 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' - a wonderful documentary I think you'd enjoy as much as we did.
i read it once before i knew and i read it again after i knew, and my conclusion is that this is a super poem with colors and purposes ablaze!
good good going, lydia.
ps i love bamboo too. on cape cod of all places there is a small bamboo forest and the way the sun shines through the branches is miraculous
xoxo

Fireblossom~ How cute to think of Pandas drooling. :)
Amber Lee~ Our next-door neighbors have a small grove of bamboo on one side of their house. They use small white lights to illuminate the area at night and it truly is magical.
susan~ Wow, thanks for that link. I will def look at the video. You come across the most interesting videos, Susan!
kj~ I am humbled that you think this is a super poem. For saying such a nice thing to me I will take you to Bamboo Sushi if you ever visit this area!
