The celebrated architect, whose vision-
ary minimalist work was prized world-
wide, publicly announced his retirement
after the surprise closing of his head-
quarters in Milan. He later shunned the
media, agreeing to only one interview

life he said:
"It was a life -- not belonging to me but
to art -- lived in fits of passion with
intervals of meditation. Passion was the
work itself and meditation fed the
creative spark. I lived, I will die. My
buildings will live beyond me, some
more appreciated than others. And
the nest is history."
