Old Postcard Wednesday--Moonlight on Puget Sound, Washington
There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.
- Leonard Cohen
:::
Tonight my husband and I will be in Portland for the Leonard Cohen World Tour 2010 concert. I am so thankful that we have the opportunity and resources to see him. It already is a night I will never forget.
I have to be honest and say that i have mixed feelings about Leonard Cohen - Suzanne was one of the first songs i learned on guitar as it was in the Complete Guitar Player book, but there's a comedy version by a UK comedian called Mike Harding which i tend to remember more (all about this endless meal where "she got out some more crackers" (crakers that you eat cheese on))
So my only knowledge of Cohen until recently was a song i saw on some benefit show about being trapped in a building that was burning down (I remember Sam Brown, who sang on Pink Floyd tours, on backing vocals) - it was the most miserable thing i've ever heard
Then Shrek came out and i heard Hallelujah (great song) - and REM's great cover version of First We Take Manhatten...
So I don't really know whether i like him or not - haven't really heard enough to really decide
That voice! Lucky you! I saw him in Dublin last summer. He is even more amazing than ever, (and one of the finest looking seventy something years old in the world!)
How are you doing Lydia? It's Wednesday night now and here's hoping that you are enjoying the concert right now!
Last night on PBS here, they had the PBS marathon for donations so they ran a great live concert video of Leonard Cohen from a year or two back. Along with Riverdance and "superstar belly dancers" which I really thought was great and beautiful. I think I will get the DVD of the beautiful belly dancers from different countries. Check them out Lydia. All the colors and veils and spinning and the music was wonderful! How talented they are to do all that.
Anyway Leonard is such a great writer and poet and when he put's his words together with his graveling deep voice and what's going on in this world I am so glad he is continuing on his wonderful path of life. He really has and continues to make a difference in this world. He is "real" and seems a happy senior citizen...but still young in his heart and soul..but age has brought him great honesty and wisdom.
Enjoy the show! And hope you and your husband have a wonderful holiday Lydia. I'm not on much on the blog world of late, "again" but lots happening in my life. I'm back with my loved one and we both seemed to have learned a lot by are time apart.
Pixies~ I had read your comment prior to the show so thought of you during the evening. If I could have teletransported you there I'd have done it. Words can't describe how wonderful he and all the musicians were.
kathew~ We did! It was the best, and the people in the audience were the coolest crowd I've ever been in at a concert.
Words A Day~ You and I (among thousands others) share a special memory of seeing Leonard Cohen live. And yes, he looks great. Better than great!
Fireblossom~ We enjoyed, most definitely. And, ahem...one whose private imitations of him is reading this and I want her to know they are superb.:)
Phivos~ You would have loved the concert I think. ;)
Rhi~ Wow, big news from you. It explains why you aren't blogging much these days. I do hope all the best for you, Rhi. If this be the end of the year of your big hurt, then may 2011 be the year of repairing the hurt.
I hope you had a wonderful time at the concert. The Moody Blues are going to be here in May & hubby would love to see them. Gonna try to make it happen for him :)
Looking to the Stars~ We certainly did have a wonderful time, double-wonderful. Oh, I do hope you can get tickets for the Moody Blues. I have seen the PBS production of their concert at Red Rocks; they still stir my spirit. :)
Freda~ I am terribly sorry that you are having a difficult time right now. When Leonard Cohen sang this song Wednesday night in Portland it felt so healing. I am glad that the video brought you some comfort. xo
My sister-in-law saw him a few weeks ago in Victoria, BC (or maybe she went to Vancouver with her son that night). Anyway, she told me about the show and now I'm envious all over again. I know it's been a very long tour since he began in Croatia last July but I was sorry not to see a city closer to us on the itinerary - no LA or Chicago or NYC either. Ah well, maybe next year after he's had a bit of a rest. I'm so glad you enjoyed the show.
susan~ Thanks. Your sister-in-law and I are lucky women to have caught this tour, and I certainly hope that he does rest and go another round so you can be so fortunate as to see him also. If he played again anywhere within 500 miles from here I would make every effort to see him again.

Enjoy! He's a singular talent. (some people even imitate him, privately) ;-)
Wonderful quote and excellent music. Thank you for sharing dear Lydia. Hugs.

Thanks for posting this video - it helped to cheer me up on a very difficult day. I've posted it on my own blog for Saturday with your link.

Just what I needed this morning, Lydia. Thank you. :o)
Beautiful and touching. Missed hearing Perla and Julie on back-up, though.
